China is betting on health tech as AI market booms
China is flexing its artificial intelligence muscle, showcasing a host of medical innovations at this year's World AI Conference in Shanghai. Many of the systems use artificial intelligence to help diagnose health problems more quickly and efficiently than a doctor would alone. Companies around the world view AI as an opportunity to improve medical care, free up doctor's time and relieve the pressure that ageing populations are putting on healthcare systems. While the United States emerged as an early frontrunner in the industry, the European Union has taken a stricter stance when it comes to regulating AI, in a bid to protect privacy and fundamental rights. Meanwhile, China's medical AI boom is strongly supported by the central government, which wants the country to become the world's leading AI innovation centre by 2030.

Are we about to enter a new "golden age" of medical innovation?
After decades of rapid progress, advances in medical technologies have slowed in recent years. But there are reasons to be hopeful, according to the Global Innovation Index 2019, with artificial intelligence, genomics, and mobile health applications all poised to transform global healthcare. GENEVA, 31 October 2019 - In the context of the joint technical symposium by the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), GII Co-Editor Sacha Wunsch-Vincent presented the results of the GII 2019 Theme Chapter on Creating Healthy Lives -- The Future of Medical Innovation, answering the question: "Are we about to enter a new "golden age" of medical innovation?" Over the last century, improvements in healthcare have doubled life expectancy in developed and developing countries, resulting in an expanded workforce, greater economic growth and improved quality of life. Driving those improvements has been healthcare innovation, both in technologies, such as chemotherapy and joint replacements, and in processes, such as better hygiene and enhanced public health planning.

Dr. Marc Siegel: Miracles await -- 2019 will be a year of amazing strides in medical innovation
Back in October, the renowned Cleveland Clinic hosted a major conference on medical innovation and listed its own top health care breakthrough categories for 2019. With the new year upon us, I am excited to say that I completely agree with the Clinic's outlook and eagerly anticipate what is coming. First up on the list are new non-addictive alternatives to pain management. FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb told me in a recent interview that exciting research is going on in this area and that new drugs will emerge where a patient's genetic makeup will help determine the best treatment. This past year scientists at Wake Forest School of Medicine found such a new drug, known as AT-121, so far only tested in non-human primates, which suppresses the addictive effects of opioids while at the same time decreasing pain.
